Cheeky's Week characters

Here's a list of all the major characters to appear in Cheeky's Week.

Just to clarify, 'Cheeky's Week' in this context means all the daily strips in Cheeky Weekly featuring Cheeky and his pals, not just the Cheeky's Week cover feature.

'Major characters' means all those characters who were given a name in the strips.

For each character, the total number of issues in which they appeared (in a Cheeky's Week strip) and their debut and farewell dates are shown.

Please note that the table below excludes named characters who appeared only once, as they have been/will be the subject of the ongoing One-Off posts, and I'm keeping them a secret until they get their moment in the One-Off spotlight.  So there.

MOST RECENT UPDATE: 14 March 2019  - I found an appearance of Ivor E Tugger that I hadn't previously recorded.

UPDATED 24 February 2019 - Removed Mustapha Million from the list as his 3 previously-listed appearances contained 2 front covers (21 January and 04 November 1978), neither of which can be considered to be within Cheeky's Week. This left Mustapha with 1 Cheeky's Week appearance (02 February 1980 - the final issue), which therefore falls into the 'one-offs' category, and those are not included in this list. Mystery Boy removed as his 2 listed appearances were also front covers (07 October 1978 and 10 February 1979) promoting his story inside.

  1. My favourite - after Cheeky himself - was Posh Claude. The quote I remember best was 'Claude's telephone doesn't ring, it coughs politely' - NB not a verbatim quote. I got Cheeky Weekly for a couple of years and adored it. Even at that age (I was 11/12) I knew it was several cuts above the other comics. Surreal, intelligent & hilarious! But then Smash Hits came out & that was that. Very funny comic - I have extremely fond memories of it. It was also bigger than most so I felt I was getting loads for my 10p ... Good stuff.

    1. Hi Annajane - yes, Posh Claude was a great character - I love the way he's often exposed as being far from posh, but it doesn't deter him from maintaining the pretense (although there was actually some ambiguity about his true background, as you've probably seen here).

  2. I don't remember Claude's dad but 'Mumikins' is very memorable! Did Cheeky Weekly do posters of their characters? I have a vague memory of having Ursula on my wall...I'd love to see it all again - I was unhappy at school back then & really looked forward to Saturdays and Cheeky & his (often corny) jokes!

    1. You can read about the Pin-Up Pal posters here. There was indeed a poster of the lumbering lolly-lady, Ursula. Bruce is the custodian of the online Pin-Up Pal poster gallery, although it seems to be offline at the moment. Keep an eye on his blog http://comicsblog.brucelaing.id.au/ as I've just sent him a message asking what's happening about the gallery so he may get it back online.

  3. That's the one! I also had Posh Claude on my wall - and the Vicar I think. Am I right in remembering that CW was bigger than the average comic? Or am I remembering it that way because it was so packed with stuff?

    1. Cheeky Weekly was 32 pages per issue, so the same size as other IPC comics of the time. It just seemed bigger due to all the corny gags crammed into each edition!

    2. I don't remember Goalie Cat! It must have been after my time (I roughly calculate that I stopped reading in Nov 1978). Fabulous!! And maybe a forerunner of Billy the Fish ... How possible is it to get a copy of Cheeky Weekly? And if so, how much would it cost?

    3. I would imagine Ebay might be a source of a Cheeky Weekly or two, but I've never used it (all my copies of CW are the ones I bought as it was being published) so I don't know how much they would cost.
