The Whoopee Years - Cheeky - Roundup

Having completed my series of posts documenting Cheeky's Whoopee (with and without exclamation) career, I thought I'd do another post summarising the various Cheeky vehicles of that period.

Cheeky comic, What a Cheek, It's Cheeky, Cheeky Film Productions, Cheeky Movie Masterpiece and Cheeky's Easter

Commencing with the first merged issue of Whoopee! and Cheeky and for the following 29 issues, all the Cheeky Weekly survivors were confined to a Cheeky comic occupying the central 16 pages in each edition. During this run our toothy pal featured in a strip entitled What a Cheek, which appeared 28 times during the existence of the comic-within-a-comic. What a Cheek was something of an aperitif, since the grinning lad with more than his share of teeth would each week occupy several more pages within the Cheeky section, initially under the title It's Cheeky. Having appeared for 5 weeks (its brief run probably intended to introduce Cheeky and pals to Whoopee! readers), the 4-pages-a-week-except-for-one-3-pager It's Cheeky was replaced by the toothy funster's next vehicle, the 3-page Cheeky Film Productions. This was the first of a series of film spoofs, although the series was retitled the next week, becoming Cheeky's Movie Masterpiece, each of which spanned 4 pages. However, the 12 April 1980 edition carried a 4-page feature entitled Cheeky's Easter in place of the film spoof.

The final Cheeky comic appeared in the issue dated 04 October 1980.

Cheeky (initial run)

Following the abandonment of the Cheeky comic and the dropping of both What a Cheek and the Movie Masterpieces, the grinning gagster launched into a new, eponymous series. The 4-page-a-week 'Cheeky' strip ran from the issue dated 11 October 1980 to that dated 05 September 1981, so the final 4 'Cheeky' strips of this initial run appeared after the comic's reversion from Whoopee! and Cheeky to Whoopee!

During the above run Cheeky also appeared in a selection of cut-out Valentine Cards, his own Special Crossword and made a foray into Sweeny Toddler

Cheeky’s Week, Cheeky’s Pal and Tee-Hee TV News

The 12 September 1981 Whoopee! saw our toothy pal's weekly allocation of pages halved from 4 to 2. His new centre-spread consisted of the 3 strips named in the above heading, and additionally but less directly linked to the jerseyed japester, an untitled gag section and a strip starring his slithering sidekick entitled, rather unimaginatively, Cheeky's Snail - neither of these strips included our grinning chum, and he featured in only 6 episodes of Cheeky's Pal. This arrangement of strips across the centre pages lasted until the issue dated 02 January 1982, after which Cheeky's Week (a title which had previously been used in Cheeky Weekly) continued on its own for 3 issues, coming to an end in Whoopee! dated 23 January 1982.

During the above run Cheeky (or at least his grinning fizzog) appeared in the second instalment of Terry Bave's How to Draw Comic Strips Book Two in the 10 October 1981 edition.

Cheeky Diary 1982

The 4-part, cut-out 1982 Cheeky Diary began in the 09 January 1982 edition and came to an end in that dated 23 January 1982 (the same edition in which the final Cheeky's Week appeared).

It's Cheeky (second run)

The title It's Cheeky, which was used in the first merged issue of Whoopee! and Cheeky and for the subsequent 4 editions, was revived in the 30 January 1982 comic. However, unlike its previous, 4-page-a-week run, this series of It's Cheeky was reduced to one page per week. The second It's Cheeky run spanned 16 issues, coming to an end in Whoopee! dated 15 May 1982.

Cheeky (second run)

Cheeky's strip was again renamed as of the 22 May 1982 edition, once again reverting to a title used earlier in the toothy funster's sojourn in the pages of Whoopee! The second run of 'Cheeky' consisted of single-page stories (except for 25 December 1982's 'Cheeky's Christmas Crackers' which, rather than the usual story, contained a single illustration depicting the titular tittermeister and pals enjoying a festive slap up feed while exchanging yuletide gags) until Whoopee took on board the survivors from Wow! in the comic dated 02 July 1983. From that issue on Cheeky's strip was reduced to a single row of panels, although the feature retained the 'Cheeky' title. The newly-combined comic continued to style itself Whoopee and Wow! until the issue dated 23 February 1985 following which, as preparations were made for yet another merge (this time it was Whoopee itself that was to be absorbed), the final 5 issues were titled Whoopee. The 'Cheeky' strip appeared in the final Whoopee, dated 30 March 1985, but sadly our toothy pal wasn't among the Whoopee crew selected for transfer to Whizzer and Chips (although he did of course continue to appear there as a member of The Krazy Gang until 08 February 1986).

During the final run of the 'Cheeky' feature, the grinning gagster also fetched up in Quizmaster, E.T.Challenge and TV Quiz Kids. UPDATE 11 March 2020 - I forgot our toothy pal also appeared when the Whoopee editor admitted a faux pas regarding the E.T. Challenge closing date.

Having said I wanted to summarise the Cheeky strips of the post-merge-with-Whoopee period, I thought I'd also include a full list of our grinning pal's appearances. Please note the table below includes all the Cheeky's Pal strips, although Cheeky only appeared in those dedicated to Dr Braincell, Baker's Boy, Jogging Jeremy, Ursula, Louise and Constable Chuckle.

Whizzer and Chips - The Cheeky Raids part 49

New readers start here... After Cheeky Weekly folded and was incorporated into Whoopee as of February 1980 six strips that had originated in the toothy funster's title survived the merge and continued to appear in the amalgamated comic. Whoopee itself foundered in March 1985 and was merged into Whizzer and Chips. Three of the surviving Cheeky Weekly strips successfully negotiated this second merge and went on to appear in the newly combined publication, rather inelegantly titled 'Whizzer and Chips now including Whoopee'. The survivors were Mustapha Million, Calculator Kid and (appearing only twice) Stage School. Cheeky continued to appear, but as a member of The Krazy Gang, who had moved into W&C when Krazy, the comic in which the Gang originated, expired in April 1978. However, the Krazy Gang's Whizzer and Chips run ended in the issue dated 08 February 1986. Calculator Kid survived a little longer, his run of reprints coming to an end in the 26 July 1986 edition and leaving Mustapha Million as the sole Cheeky Weekly survivor.

During the period covered so far in this series of Whizzer and Chips – The Cheeky Raids posts, every week a character from Chips infiltrated Whizzer and a member of the Whizzer cast gate-crashed Chips (although long-time followers of this blog will know that I only report on those raids which involved characters who appeared in Cheeky Weekly). For the benefit of those less-than-eagle-eyed Whizz-kids or Chip-ites who were unable to locate the sneaky interlopers, the identities of the clandestine intruders were revealed each week in the following issue.

However, it appears that the Whizzer and Chips editor’s apparent concerns over the unexpected consequences resulting from the rivalry he had engendered among readers, which emerged in May 1988, resulted in a moratorium on raids as of Whizzer and Chips dated 30 July 1988, because commencing with the 06 August 1988 issue raiders ceased to be identified. Now, this poses something of a problem for me, since sometimes the cunningly-concealed uninvited guests can be difficult to spot. When I encountered such a situation while researching this series up to this point I was able to refer to the next issue to discover who had been raided by whom. Nevertheless I have done my best to scour the issues from 30 July 1988 (in which the previous week’s raiders were revealed but no raids on that week’s content were in evidence) onwards for raiders, and it seems that for a period there was a halt to ’new’ raids. I believe a few raids did appear during what we might call The Great Whizzer and Chips Truce, but it seems that they only featured in reprinted strips which included a raider on their first outing. In fact there was such an occurrence in that same 06 August 1988 first-to-include-no-raider-report issue, when the reprinted Lazy Bones strip included a raid by an old character, Brave Dave.

Here is that reprinted Lazy Bones strip from the 06 August 1988 issue. The strip had originally appeared in Whizzer and Chips dated 19 November 1983.

Brave Dave first appeared in Whizzer and Chips dated 16 July 1983. Since he's a little-remembered character (certainly not as famous as Odd-Ball or Joker, for example), here's his strip from that same 19 November 1983 edition.

There are 2 further reprinted raids that I have identified during the period of the Truce – the next being a further intrusion upon Lazy Bones, this time by JR in the 13 August 1988 comic. I'm assuming that this is another reprinted raid - I must admit I haven't tried tracking down the original. UPDATE 05 December 2019 - My thanks to Stephen Archer who has tracked down the original appearance of JR raiding Lazy Bones to Whizzer and Chips dated 21 April 1984.

However, the third reprinted raid is more relevant to this blog, since the incursion is undertaken by none other than our toothy pal. This Store Wars story originally appeared in Whizzer and Chips dated 25 August 1984, and was reprinted during the Truce, in the 05 August 1989 edition.

Frank's a Tonic!

By the summer of 1982 the strip that was formerly known as The 12½p Buytonic Boy when it made its debut in Krazy, had been shorn of its monetary prefix during hero Steve Ford's continuing campaign against the villainous NME organisation in the pages of Whizzer and Chips. This adjustment to the title was probably made because younger readers would have been unaware of the  '70s TV series which the strip originally spoofed, The Six Million Dollar Man (and not, as the Wikipedia page linked to above currently suggests, because the ½ p coin had ceased to be legal tender at that time - that didn't happen until 1984).

In those summer months, while Britons were happily still spending their ½ ps, little suspecting that Nigel Lawson was plotting their demise (the coins, not the Britons. But then again...), Robert Nixon, regular artist on the strip, took a few weeks off. Stepping in to illustrate the escapades of the titular potion-enhanced adventurer were Brian Walker and, for 3 issues, Frank McDiarmid.
