Frank McDiarmid in post-Whoopee-merge Whizzer and Chips

In this post I'm focusing on the features that Frank McDiarmid drew in Whizzer and Chips between its absorption of Whoopee as of the issue dated 06 April 1985 and Whizzer and Chips' final issue dated 27 October 1990. This is something of an aperitif for my next post examining Frank's weekly Whizzer and Chips work on Mustapha Million, which amounted to 153 episodes spanning issues dated 24 October 1987 to the aforementioned 27 October 1990 terminal edition.

 

Boy Boss (Frank drew 51 Whizzer and Chips episodes during the period under review)

Boy Boss - Whizzer and Chips 29 March 1986

 

Boy Boss was a feature documenting the business dealings of the youthful executive in charge of a multinational enterprise known as The Company. The angular-haired BB often found himself pitted against the company's scheming accountant, the skeletal Jasper Ferret, who felt he was far more qualified to be running the organisation. This strip began in Wow!, then transferred into Whoopee and thence into the first combined issue of Whizzer and Chips now including Whoopee dated 06 April 1985. During his Whizzer and Chips career, Boy Boss appeared weekly until 22 June 1985, but was absent the following week, then returned for 2 more weeks. After its 13 July 1985 appearance, the feature was missing until its return in the 26 October 1985 edition, when it was allocated a page within the Chips section of the comic, having previously been located within Whizzer. All subsequent Boy Boss episodes were within Chips, including its final outing in the comic dated 26 July 1986.

During his run on Boy Boss, Frank also supplied 2 episodes of Super Steve V NME Nasties (19 October 1985 which was the issue before BB returned to the comic as a Chip-ite, and 01 February 1986 - see below), and one Town Tarzan escapade (26 July 1986 which was the issue containing the final BB episode, a story depicting Jasper Ferret's nightmare in which the titular tycoon falls into a copying machine thus generating a multitude of Boy Bosses [or should that be Boys Boss?]).

 

Cosmic Cafe (49 episodes)

Cosmic Cafe - Whizzer and Chips 20 May 1989

 

Cosmic Cafe catalogued the culinary conundrums faced by a family running the titular interplanetary eatery, as they provided sustenance for a variety of alien customers while coping with galactic hazards such as microgravity and meteor storms. The first episode appeared in Whizzer and Chips dated 13 May 1989, that issue carrying a cover illustration drawn by Jimmy Hansen depicting the cafe owners feeding a selection of Whizz-kids and Chip-ites together with an alien and robot. However, all the actual episodes were drawn by Frank, with the strip being taken off the menu with a final serving dated 28 April 1990. Seven days later Whizzer and Chips went full colour and was reduced from 32 to 24 pages per week, so clearly Cosmic Cafe was culled as a result of the reduction in page count, which is a pity because I'm sure the alien/space scenes would have looked good in colour (all but 2 of the weekly episodes were black and white).

The deep space dietary dilemmas of Cosmic Cafe appeared in Whizzer and Chips during Frank's run illustrating Mustapha Million, but the Cafe capers were absent from 2 issues of Whizzer and Chips during the CC run -  23 September 1989 (a Mustapha reprint interrupted Frank's run on Mustapha that week) and 17 March 1990 (Frank did contribute a Mustapha episode in that issue).

 

 

Town Tarzan (12 episodes drawn by Frank) 

Town Tarzan - Whizzer and Chips 11 July 1987

Trevor Metcalfe was the main artist for this feature, which related the activities of  young Tommy Tarbrush. After watching a Tarzan film on TV as a toddler, Tommy found he could communicate with animals, and developed a penchant for stripping to his leopardskin loincloth and emulating Edgar Rice Burroughs' jungle adventurer. However, whereas Tarzan's domain was the steamy and tangled undergrowth of Africa teeming with lions, elephants and gorillas, Tommy inhabited the urban landscape of late 20th century UK and was more likely to encounter domestic pets.

Town Tarzan made his debut in Whizzer and Chips dated 15 February 1986, and swung and 'AAEEAAH!'-ed his way through a commendable 151 episodes before the feature came to an end (and the final panel did contain a caption reading 'The End') in the 31 December 1988 edition.

Frank deputised for Trevor on 12 episodes between 1986 and 1988. On the first occasion (26 July 1986) Frank also drew Boy Boss in the same issue, and the 2 final occasions (28 May and 04 June 1988) both coincided with Frank also drawing Mustapha Million (see table below for dates of all Frank's Town Tarzans).

 

 

Super Steve v NME Nasties (2 episodes drawn by Frank)

Super Steve v NME Nasties - Whizzer and Chips 19 October 1985

 

This was a strip which solicited reader suggestions for opponents (aka 'Nasties') capable of defeating the mighty and titular Steve Ford (who was previously known by a number of other names), on behalf of the evil organisation the NME. The feature appeared in the first post-Whoopee merge edition of Whizzer and Chips, and continued without missing an issue until its final episode in which the NME abandoned their quest for world domination, conceding that Steve is unbeatable, in the comic dated 08 February 1986. Frank deputised for the regular artist on the feature, Robert Nixon, in the 19 October 1985 and 01 February 1986 (the penultimate episode) comics. The latter occasion coincided with Frank's run on Boy Boss.

 

 

Store Wars (1 episode drawn by Frank)

Store Wars - Whizzer and Chips 08 August 1987

 

The Store Wars feature focused on the retail rivalry between a bespectacled character known only as Bloggs, owner of a small grocery/hardware shop, and nominatively-deterministic Mr Superstore, the incongruously bowler-hatted proprietor of the giant emporium immediately next door. Seven artists supplied Store Wars episodes during Whizzer and Chips' post-Whoopee-merge era; Jim Watson contributed 125 (I'm guessing a number of these were reprints), Jimmy Hansen supplied 59, Doug Jensen illustrated 45, Tom Williams delivered 2, and Joe McCaffrey, Barrie Appleby and Frank McDiarmid provided one each. Frank's version appeared in the issue dated 08 August 1987, deputising for Jimmy Hansen, who had assumed artwork duties in the 13 June 1987 edition.

 

 

Junior Rotter (3 episodes drawn by Frank)

Junior Rotter - Whizzer and Chips 24 October 1987

  

Set in an unspecified United States location, Junior Rotter was a series which chronicled the schemes of the eponymous Stetson-sporting master mischief-maker, also known as J.R. (inspiration for the character clearly having been the similarly-initialled main antagonist in contemporary super-soap, Dallas). The feature was present in all issues of the weekly Whizzer and Chips during the post-Whoopee-merge era, although the edition dated 28 September 1985 didn't include a standard Junior Rotter episode, instead containing the first of a series of four 8-page 'cut-out pocket story books' featuring various Whizzer and Chips characters, this inaugural cut-out book being entitled 'J.R. in Britain Beware', drawn by Trevor Metcalfe. Trevor drew all of the weekly episodes except for the 3 illustrated by Frank, which appeared in the issues dated 10 and 24 October 1987 (Frank also drew Sweet-Tooth in the 10 October issue - see below), and 09 July 1988 (the latter 2 Junior Rotter episodes coinciding with Frank's Mustapha Million run).

Sweet-Tooth - Whizzer and Chips 10 October 1987

 

Another Whizzer and Chips stalwart, the confectionary-craving Sweet-Tooth enjoyed a solid run in the post-Whoopee-merge era, but his appearances began to become more intermittent at the point at which Whizzer and Chips absorbed rodent-related title Scouse Mouse (15 April 1989). Sweet-Tooth's sucrose-seeking shenanigans were in evidence in 256 of the 291 Whizzer and Chips issues published during the period in question, but the hyperglycaemic humour drew to a close as far as the weekly Whizzer and Chips was concerned in the 28 April 1990 comic. Trevor Metcalfe drew the bulk of the episodes, but deputising for him at various times were Barry Glennard, Bob Hill, Vic Neill and, in the issue dated 10 October 1987, Frank McDiarmid. In the same issue Frank provided the art on another of Trevor's strips, Junior Rotter (see above).

Frank was assigned a surprising number of alliteratively-titled features during this period; Mustapha Million, Boy Boss, Cosmic Cafe, Town Tarzan and Super Steve.

The table below represents all the issues spanning the above dates, and indicates the features drawn by Frank in that period. Please note that Mustapha Million was present in all issues during this time, but since the table focuses only on Frank's work, Mustapha Million is only shown as from the point at which Frank took over the artwork duties (24 October 1987). Where Mustapha Million is not shown against particular issues after that date, it means that a reprint drawn by another artist was published that week. However, where episodes of Boy Boss and Cosmic Cafe are missing during their run, it's because the feature was absent from the comic that week.
