The Whoopee Years - The Cheeky Section

As I mentioned in my earlier diatribe, the merge which resulted in the amalgamated publication styling itself Whoopee! and Cheeky was an unusual one, as the incoming features from the toothy funster's comic were corralled into the central pages for the first 30 issues of the combined title. There follows a quick flick through each of the Cheeky Sections...

As announced on the cover of the first combined issue, the 'Cheeky Comic' within Whoopee! amounted to 16 pages (although one page was given over to the competition to win FriscoDisco battery-powered record players, and a further two carried the cut-out Fib card game elements). Thus the Cheeky Section (as I'm going to refer to it or, when I'm feeling lazy, CS) occupied pages 9 to 24 in the 32-page amalgamated title. The cover of the CS (I'm feeling lazy already) carries our grinning pal's tooth-packed fizzog alongside an announcement that 2000 Friend of Cheeky badges are up for grabs. To secure a free badge readers must send a stamped addressed envelope to the Whoopee and Cheeky office

Further within the CS, Cheeky is allocated a gratifying 4 pages within which to commit his usual round of jests and japes.

The first appearance in Whoopee! and Cheeky of the What a Cheek feature (Frank McDiarmid's first contribution to the CS) which will appear on the front of all but 2 of the remaining 28 Cheeky Sections (although will be absent from only one). What a Cheek was of course the title of Cheeky Weekly's cover strip for 41 issues.

Frank also takes up the artwork duties on It's Cheeky following last week's Mike Lacey pages.

Paddywack is bumped from the Cheeky Section (and, indeed, the whole comic) due to the presence of the card game, a page devoted to ads and the unwelcome (to me, anyway) arrival of the strip whose name is not to be mentioned, which gets a banner announcement atop the CS front page.

Snail commences his strip on the front cover of the Cheeky Section, in a single row of panels that harks back to Snail of the Century. The untitled strip featuring the toothy funster's slithering sidekick will from now on always accompany What a Cheek.

Paddywack is again ousted from the entire comic - the card game is reduced to a single page but readers' letters feature Whoopee Chit-Chat appears in the Cheeky Section for the first time.

However, It's Cheeky is reduced to 3 pages and there is a surprise inclusion of Whoopee! stalwart Ivor Swap. This is the only occasion on which a character from the Whoopee! section will appear in a strip within the CS, although Toy Boy and Bookworm will intrude in different roles. Whoopee Chit-Chat moves back into Whoopee!

The It's Cheeky strip which has run for the past 5 weeks has been dropped, and replaced with a feature titled Cheeky Film Productions, this week spoofing jungle adventure films. This new Cheeky vehicle sees his allocation of pages reduced from 4 to 3, but that's due to 4 pages being hogged by the second instalment of the Ticklish Allsports booklet. The CS front cover is taken up with the announcement of Bungles in the Jungle, so there is no What a Cheek or Snail this issue.

Frank's cover is reminiscent of scenes he drew for the Saturday morning picture show.

It seems the Cheeky Film Productions title for the film spoofs has been dropped in favour of the more alliterative Cheeky Movie Masterpiece. This week our toothy pal and his animal-skin-bedecked Krazy Town chums are riffing on big screen blockbusters set in prehistoric times. The feature sees Cheeky allocated a full 4 pages once again.

Bit of an upheaval this week due to the presence of the Sports Spectacular competition on Whoopee! page 8. The competition, and the decision to locate the Top Class Comics competition results within the Cheeky Section together with the Ticklish Allsports booklet, has resulted in a single-page Stage School, and seen Paddywack bumped into Whoopee! territory on page 28. C**p remains smugly in situ.

The What a Cheek/Snail combo is back on page 1 of the CS. A Jumbo X-Word, devised by reader Clare Marshall from Ascot, shares notional page 4 with Paddywack. The relocation of the bumbling buffoon from his usual position at the foot of the second Stage School page necessitates the insertion of the reader-participation Potty Pix, normally an occasional Whoopee! feature, in his usual haunt.

Publication of Whoopee! and Cheeky was then suspended for 4 weeks due to an industrial dispute.

Readers are invited to imagine what the Whoopee! and Cheeky head honcho looks like and send in their drawings to Picture the Editor. The first batch of reader renditions of the Ed were printed in Whoopee! and Cheeky dated 29 November 1980, by which time the Cheeky Section concept had been abandoned.

Notional page 4 carries an invitation to readers to send in their mask designs - the winning submission will not only be printed in this year's Guy Fawkes issue, but the artist will receive a £50 prize! The winners of the FriscoDisco competition, announced on page 15, might feel a little short-changed in view of the big prize on offer for the mask. Another advertorial, Bookworm's Bookshelf, presented by Whoopee!'s resident bibliophile, appears on page 14.

For the first time the Snail strip is printed in red and white instead of full colour. Possibly feedback from readers indicated there was confusion resulting from the lack of a title for the weekly dose of mollusc mirth, so the new colouration may have been introduced in order to more clearly delineate the junction between Cheeky chuckles and gastropod gags. This chromatic distinction will remain in effect for the remainder of the CS issues.

The centre pages of the CS are given over to the long-running Green Cross Code road safety campaign featuring Green Cross Man, who would on occasion materialise on the exhaust fume-swept streets of the UK just in time to prevent a traffic tragedy. This outing bestows upon the veteran road-safety-promulgating superhero a funky rebranding as Green X Man, referencing the symbol emblazoned across his mighty, though particulate-clogged, chest. He won't be there when you cross the road.

MISSING - Paddywack

This is the final Cheeky Section (see below for more information on what makes this the final CS). The next issue will see the first instalment of Terry Bave's How To Draw Comic Strips booklet occupy pages 9 to 12. Despite the forthcoming abandonment of the Cheeky Section concept, most of the strips previously contained within the toothy funster's comic-within-comic will continue to appear. What a Cheek and the untitled Snail strip will be dropped, as will the Cheeky Movie Masterpieces. However Cheeky will continue to appear, along with all the Cheeky Weekly survivors.

Paddywack escapes the confines of the CS for a second time (see 29 March 1980), as this week he fetches up on Whoopee! page 31.

Why was the 04 October 1980 edition the final Cheeky Section?

My belief that the Cheeky Comic within Whoopee came to an end in the 04 October 1980 issue is based on a number of factors, the main one being the references (or lack thereof) to the 'Cheeky Comic' on Whoopee's front covers. Mentions of the 'Cheeky Comic inside', usually in the form of a banner at the top of the Whoopee front cover, appeared on the front page of 24 of the 30 issues published between 09 February 1980 (the first merged Whoopee! and Cheeky) and 04 October 1980 (the final issue to contain a Cheeky Section), with the exception of the 29 March, 12 April, 16 August and 06 September editions, all the covers of which carried announcements of prize competitions inside, and the 20 September issue which promoted the reader participation features inside.  Although the 04 October Whoopee contained the final Cheeky Section, the cover didn't mention the Cheeky Comic inside - where that banner would normally have been was an announcement of the commencement of Terry Bave's How to Draw Comics booklet (the feature which brought the Cheeky Comic to an end) the following week. There were no further mentions of the Cheeky Comic.

The cover of the first Cheeky Section consisted of the 'comic' title 'Cheeky' plus our grinning pal's tooth-packed fizzog together with an offer of free badges, but as of the second CS, the title of the What a Cheek strip appeared on the 'cover' below the Cheeky title. This set the pattern for the following Cheeky Sections, with the exception of the 15 March 1980 edition, where below the Cheeky 'comic' title was an illustration announcing the first episode of the toothy funster's new movie-spoof series - Bungles in the Jungle. However, in the 03 May 1980 issue the 'cover' combination of the Cheeky title and What a Cheek strip appeared on Whoopee page 13, making it page 5 of the Cheeky Section.

As from the 11 October 1980 issue, week some of the strips originating in Cheeky Weekly, that had since the merge been limited (with a couple of exceptions) to Whoopee! and Cheeky's centre pages (page numbers 9-24 being the centre of a 32-page comic), slowly began to roam the title. I also feel that the redesigned Cheeky page which was introduced as of 11 October 1980 was no longer intended to represent the front page of a comic, and the 'Cheeky' title referred to the strip which appeared below since there was no other title in evidence, other that the 'in Rush For School' which was the newly-introduced episode title that would change each week.

New page design introduced as of 11 October 1980

In the 11 October 1980 issue, the first part of Terry Bave's How to Draw Comics booklet occupied pages 9 to 11 (what would have formerly been the first 4 pages of the Cheeky Section), and the first of that week's erstwhile Cheeky Section strips (the egregious interloper C**p) appeared on page 13, with $6,000,000 Gran on pages 14/15 and Mustapha Million on pages 16/17. Cheeky was shunted back to pages 18-21. Pages 22 -23 were home to the Bumpkin Billionaires (never previously included within the Cheeky Section) and this placing of the affable agrarians is to me a clear signal that the Cheeky Section concept was ended, because Stage School was shunted to pages 28 and 29, outside the central 16 pages and meaning the central section certainly no longer represented a 'stand-alone' title (since it's not possible to pull out a section finishing at page 29 - page 30, Scared-Stiff Sam, would have been on the back cover of that week's 'Cheeky Section' had the editor intended it to be so viewed, and Toy Boy would have been on the front!). Calculator Kid was placed on page 24 which would, under the former arrangements, have been the last Cheeky Section page.

A week later Cheeky's escapades began on page 9, but the Whoopee Chit-Chat letters page was on page 14 (admittedly Chit-Chat had intruded upon Cheeky's comic section in 21 of the 30 Cheeky Sections that I recognise) and, crucially, Lolly Pop (another Whoopee feature that was never previously allocated to a Cheeky Section) was to be found on pages 22 and 23.

In the 25 October edition, Bookworm, another Whoopee! stalwart never previously featured in the Cheeky Section, appeared on page 20.

Also, in the post-Cheeky-Section era week 4, our toothy pal's adventure commenced on page 25, putting it outside the central section. There then followed a further 7 weeks where Cheeky's strip commenced on page 9, maintaining what would have been the front cover of a 16 page pull-out. However, in the following week's Christmas issue, and the ensuing new year edition, Cheeky's strips again commenced outside the centre section, on page 8. Cheeky then returned to commencing on page 9 for a further 11 weeks, after which the grinning gagster was shunted back to page 25.

In the 08 November 1980 comic, Paddywack moved to Whoopee! and Cheeky's front page, clearly signalling the comic-within-a-comic era to be over, if the redesigned Cheeky page and intrusions into the centre pages hadn't already done so.

Whizzer and Chips - The Cheeky Raids part 40

New readers start here... After Cheeky Weekly folded and was incorporated into Whoopee as of February 1980 six strips that had originated in the toothy funster's title survived the merge and continued to appear in the amalgamated comic. Whoopee itself foundered in March 1985 and was merged into Whizzer and Chips. Three of the surviving Cheeky Weekly strips successfully negotiated this second merge and went on to appear in the newly combined publication, rather inelegantly titled 'Whizzer and Chips now including Whoopee'. The survivors were Mustapha Million, Calculator Kid and (appearing only twice) Stage School. Cheeky continued to appear, but as a member of The Krazy Gang, who had moved into W&C when Krazy, the comic in which the Gang originated, expired in April 1978. However, the Krazy Gang's Whizzer and Chips run ended in the issue dated 08 February 1986. Calculator Kid survived a little longer, his run of reprints coming to an end in the 26 July 1986 edition and leaving Mustapha Million as the sole Cheeky Weekly survivor.

A week after Mustapha intruded upon Sweet-Tooth, our moneyed mate was subject to a Whizz-Kid intruder. Scroll down to discover the identity of the interloper.

Yes, it's the rubbery rascal Odd-Ball, making his 3rd raid on Mustapha. We might have guessed the sneaky sphere wouldn't be far away when the strip concerned a load of balls. Odd-Ball had been intruded upon by Mustapha on 2 previous occasions.

More raiding fun soon!

May the Cheek be With You

Today's date is usually associated with Han Skyvader and his space-faring chums, but this year it's also Free Comic Book Day. Among the freebies being distributed by certain comic shops is Rebellion's Funny Pages, which was previewed a few days ago on Lew Stringer's blog.

There are no comic shops near where I live, and I didn't relish a long and probably fruitless trek in search of a copy. However, Lew's helpful post indicates that Cheeky, who is among the comic superstars adorning the Funny Pages front cover, is not featured in any of the strips inside. His role appears to be as a gag-cracking filler, along with other classic japesters from the IPC corral, at the foot of the pages, the otherwise-blank space presumably resulting from the different width-to-height ratio of the new comic pages compared to those of yore.

I followed the link on Lew's blog that suggests a digital version of Funny Pages is available but I couldn't see it anywhere.

Congratulations to anyone who managed to secure a copy.
