Whoopee! collectors - can you help?

UPDATE 31 July 2013 - Irmantas, author of the Kazoop blog, has very kindly provided me with scans of all the Cheeky Star Guests in Whoopee! - thanks!

I will shortly be posting the Cheeky Weekly strips which appeared during the Star Guest promotion that ran in Whizzer and Chips from 31 March to 28 July 1979. During that run in Whizzer and Chips, Star Guest presented strips from Cheeky Weekly alternating with characters usually to be found in Whoopee!

I don't have any copies of Whoopee! from that period, but I'm assuming it also ran a Star Guest promotion featuring characters from Cheeky Weekly and Whizzer and Chips. Can anyone confirm that this was the case?

If my assumption is correct, and you can provide scans of the Cheeky Weekly Star Guests that appeared in Whoopee! (either posted on your own blog, which I'll link to from here, or via the email address above and I'll post them here with acknowledgments) I'd be extremely grateful.

I've seen a couple of Busters from this period and they didn't have Star Guests - from the evidence available to me it seems that Buster never participated in Star Guest as either guest or host. If anyone knows different, please get in touch.

Thanks!

  2. I somehow missed your request for Star Guest details and I happen to be able to help because I have compiled a detailed index of Whoopee. I can send you scans but will only be able to do it towards the end of the week when I return from my travels.
There were no guest appearances of Cheeky Weekly stars in Whoopee in 1978 and here is the complete list for 1979:
Issue No. 260 (April 7th, 1979) - Baby Burpo's Special (I hope you can work issue dates yourself based on the date of the first one - my Whoopee index is based on issue Nos. rather than dates, although as you know, Whoopee issues weren't numbered)
    262 (Disaster Des),
    264 (Why, Dad, Why?),
    266 (Elephant on the Run),
    268 (Cheeky),
    270 (Cheeky),
    272 (Mustapha Million),
    274 (Cheeky),
    276 (Mustapha Million),

    1. Thanks very much for the info, and whenever you get time to do the scans that would be great.

  3. As for Buster, it was never part of the Star Guest promotion feature.

  4. That's what I suspected - thanks for confirming it. It's puzzling, though - surely Buster was one of the most popular titles of the period, so although that could explain why Buster stars never guested in other comics (i.e. IPC wanted to promote their less popular titles), it would seem logical to include Star Guests in Buster to encourage Buster readers to sample other IPC comics. I wonder why they didn't do it. Maybe they were scared that Buster (which was arguably their flagship humour/adventure title) circulation figures could decline if too many readers were tempted away to other IPC comics.
